Warning Signs Your Old Boiler Is Unsafe
Know when 'old but working' becomes a genuine risk.
Boilers don't last forever, and an aging unit can develop safety issues as seals, heat exchangers and controls wear. Recognising the warning signs early lets you act before a breakdown — or a safety incident.
If you notice any of the signs below, book a professional inspection. Many older boilers are also far less efficient than a modern condensing combi, so replacement often pays for itself.
Warning signs to watch for
- Yellow or orange flame instead of crisp blue
- Soot, staining or scorching around the boiler
- Frequent breakdowns or recurring fault codes
- A boiler over 12–15 years old losing efficiency
- Unusual smells or persistent condensation
- Pilot light that frequently goes out (older units)
This is not a DIY repair
Combi boilers are gas-fired appliances regulated under the BC Safety Standards Act. Opening the unit, touching the gas valve, or working on the flue without a valid BC gas-fitter licence is both unsafe and illegal. Diagnosing the fault is helpful — fixing it should always be left to a certified technician.
