Carbon Monoxide Safety for Boiler Owners
The single most important safety topic for any gas appliance owner.
Carbon monoxide (CO) is a colourless, odourless gas produced by incomplete combustion. A correctly installed and maintained combi boiler vents combustion gases safely outside — but a fault in the burner, heat exchanger or flue can allow CO into your home, where it can be deadly.
The two best protections are a working CO alarm and annual professional servicing of your boiler.
Protect your home from CO
- Install CO alarms near sleeping areas and on each level
- Test alarms monthly and replace per the manufacturer's date
- Have your boiler serviced annually by a licensed technician
- Watch for yellow/orange flames, soot or staining around the boiler
- Never block boiler air vents or flue terminals
Symptoms of CO exposure
Headaches, dizziness, nausea, breathlessness, confusion and drowsiness — often affecting several people in the home at once — can indicate CO exposure. If you suspect CO, get everyone out into fresh air immediately and call 911 or your gas utility's emergency line. Seek medical attention.
Smell gas or suspect carbon monoxide? Leave now.
If you smell gas, hear hissing, or your CO alarm sounds, leave the building immediately and call your gas utility's emergency line from outside. Do not operate switches or relight the appliance. Once you are safe, call us for a licensed repair.
