What to Do If You Suspect a Gas Leak
Know these steps before you ever need them.
Licensed & Insured Gas-Certified Technicians Serving Vancouver Since 1999
A suspected gas leak is an emergency. Natural gas has a deliberately added rotten-egg odour so you can detect it. If you smell gas, your priority is getting people out safely — not investigating or fixing anything.
Follow these steps, then let professionals make the appliance safe.
Emergency steps
- Get everyone out of the building
- Don't operate any electrical switches, plugs or phones inside
- Don't light matches or create any flame or spark
- If safe to do so on your way out, turn off the gas at the meter
- Open a door as you leave to ventilate
- Call your gas utility's emergency line from outside
- Don't go back in until you're told it's safe
Smell gas or suspect carbon monoxide? Leave now.
If you smell gas, hear hissing, or your CO alarm sounds, leave the building immediately and call your gas utility's emergency line from outside. Do not operate switches or relight the appliance. Once you are safe, call us for a licensed repair.
