Is It Safe to Reset My Combi Boiler?
One reset can be fine — repeated resets are a red flag.
Most combi boilers have a reset button for clearing a lockout. A single reset, when your manual permits, is generally safe if there's no smell of gas and no obvious fault. But if the boiler locks out again, that's a sign of a genuine fault that resetting won't fix.
Repeatedly resetting through ignition, overheat or flue faults can be unsafe — stop and call a licensed technician.
Reset safely
- No gas smell and no visible fault before resetting
- Reset only once, as your manual describes
- If it locks out again, stop and call a technician
- Never repeatedly reset ignition or overheat faults
- Note the fault code to help diagnosis
This is not a DIY repair
Combi boilers are gas-fired appliances regulated under the BC Safety Standards Act. Opening the unit, touching the gas valve, or working on the flue without a valid BC gas-fitter licence is both unsafe and illegal. Diagnosing the fault is helpful — fixing it should always be left to a certified technician.
