Boiler Venting & Flue Safety
The flue is your boiler's safety lifeline to the outside air.
Your combi boiler's flue carries combustion gases safely outside and, on many units, draws in fresh combustion air. If the flue is blocked, damaged, badly routed or terminates too close to a window, combustion gases — including carbon monoxide — can be drawn back into your home.
Flue and venting work is licensed for this reason. Keep terminals clear of snow, leaves and nests, and have any flue concern inspected promptly.
Flue safety essentials
- Keep the outside flue terminal clear of obstructions
- Never extend or modify a flue yourself
- Watch for condensation stains or soot near the flue
- Ensure terminals are the correct distance from windows and doors
- Have flue integrity checked at every annual service
This is not a DIY repair
Combi boilers are gas-fired appliances regulated under the BC Safety Standards Act. Opening the unit, touching the gas valve, or working on the flue without a valid BC gas-fitter licence is both unsafe and illegal. Diagnosing the fault is helpful — fixing it should always be left to a certified technician.
