Where to Put CO Alarms in Your Home
The right alarm in the right place saves lives.
Carbon monoxide alarms are your last line of defence against a combustion fault you can't see or smell. Placement matters: alarms should be near sleeping areas and on each level of the home, following the alarm manufacturer's guidance.
Combined with annual boiler servicing, correctly placed CO alarms dramatically reduce risk.
Placement guidance
- Near sleeping areas so an alarm wakes you
- On each level of the home
- Follow the alarm maker's distance-from-appliance guidance
- Test monthly; replace by the printed expiry date
- Never remove batteries to stop nuisance beeps
This is not a DIY repair
Combi boilers are gas-fired appliances regulated under the BC Safety Standards Act. Opening the unit, touching the gas valve, or working on the flue without a valid BC gas-fitter licence is both unsafe and illegal. Diagnosing the fault is helpful — fixing it should always be left to a certified technician.
