Preparing Your Combi Boiler for Winter
A little preparation prevents the coldest-night breakdown.
The busiest time for boiler breakdowns is the first cold snap, when systems that sat idle all summer are suddenly pushed hard. A little preparation in early autumn dramatically reduces the odds of a mid-winter failure.
Here's how to get ready — and what to leave to a technician.
Get winter-ready
- Book your annual service before the heating season
- Test the heating early — don't wait for the first freeze
- Check and top up pressure if needed
- Bleed radiators with cold spots
- Insulate the condensate pipe against freezing
- Test CO alarms
Why timing matters
Servicing in late summer or early autumn means you avoid the winter rush and aren't waiting days for a technician during a cold snap. It's the single best winter-prep move.
This is not a DIY repair
Combi boilers are gas-fired appliances regulated under the BC Safety Standards Act. Opening the unit, touching the gas valve, or working on the flue without a valid BC gas-fitter licence is both unsafe and illegal. Diagnosing the fault is helpful — fixing it should always be left to a certified technician.
