Advice
Combi Boiler vs Conventional Boiler
Two approaches to home heating and hot water — compared.
A combi boiler heats water on demand and needs no storage cylinder, while a conventional or system boiler heats water that's stored in a cylinder for later use. Each has strengths depending on your home's size, hot water demand and number of bathrooms.
For most Vancouver homes a combi is ideal, but high-demand households with multiple simultaneous showers sometimes benefit from a system boiler with storage.
Combi advantages
- No cylinder or tank — saves significant space
- Hot water on demand, never runs out
- Lower installation complexity in many homes
- High efficiency and rebate eligibility
When a system boiler may be better
Large homes with several bathrooms used at once can outstrip a single combi's instantaneous flow. In those cases a system boiler with a stored cylinder, or a high-output/cascade combi setup, may serve better. We assess your peak demand before recommending.
This is not a DIY repair
Combi boilers are gas-fired appliances regulated under the BC Safety Standards Act. Opening the unit, touching the gas valve, or working on the flue without a valid BC gas-fitter licence is both unsafe and illegal. Diagnosing the fault is helpful — fixing it should always be left to a certified technician.
