Combi Boiler vs Furnace for BC Homes
Radiant warmth vs forced air — which is right for your home?
Furnaces heat air and blow it through ducts; combi boilers heat water that circulates through radiators or radiant floors. Hydronic heat from a combi boiler is often described as more even and comfortable, with no blowing dust or drafts, while furnaces can share ductwork with air conditioning.
The right choice depends on your existing distribution, comfort preferences and whether you also want central cooling.
Combi/hydronic strengths
- Even, quiet, draft-free warmth
- No ductwork needed — good for older homes
- No blown dust or allergens
- Pairs with radiant floors for premium comfort
Furnace considerations
Furnaces share ducts with central AC and can heat a home quickly, but move air (and dust) and can feel less even. Many BC homes with existing radiators are natural candidates for a combi boiler upgrade.
This is not a DIY repair
Combi boilers are gas-fired appliances regulated under the BC Safety Standards Act. Opening the unit, touching the gas valve, or working on the flue without a valid BC gas-fitter licence is both unsafe and illegal. Diagnosing the fault is helpful — fixing it should always be left to a certified technician.
