Hard Water, Limescale & Your Combi Boiler
Scale is a silent efficiency-killer.
In hard-water areas, dissolved minerals form limescale on the boiler's heat exchanger and in the hot water circuit. Scale insulates surfaces, reduces efficiency, causes kettling noise and shortens component life. Protecting against it keeps your combi running well.
Water treatment and regular descaling are the main defences.
Protecting against scale
- Consider a scale-reduction device on the supply
- Descale the heat exchanger during servicing
- Watch for kettling noise (a scale symptom)
- Keep up annual maintenance
- Choose boilers with scale-resistant exchangers in hard-water areas
This is not a DIY repair
Combi boilers are gas-fired appliances regulated under the BC Safety Standards Act. Opening the unit, touching the gas valve, or working on the flue without a valid BC gas-fitter licence is both unsafe and illegal. Diagnosing the fault is helpful — fixing it should always be left to a certified technician.
