Reducing Combi Boiler Noise
A well-set-up boiler should barely be heard.
Some boiler noise is normal, but excessive humming, vibration or kettling can be reduced. Causes range from a failing pump and trapped air to limescale on the heat exchanger or loose pipework. Addressing the root cause both quiets the boiler and protects it.
A technician can identify and fix the source of unusual noise.
Common noise sources & fixes
- Trapped air — bleed and re-pressurise
- Limescale (kettling) — descale the heat exchanger
- Failing pump — replace the circulator
- Loose pipework — secure and insulate
- Incorrect flow temperature — recommission
This is not a DIY repair
Combi boilers are gas-fired appliances regulated under the BC Safety Standards Act. Opening the unit, touching the gas valve, or working on the flue without a valid BC gas-fitter licence is both unsafe and illegal. Diagnosing the fault is helpful — fixing it should always be left to a certified technician.
