How Long Do Combi Boilers Last?

A well-maintained combi boiler typically lasts 10–15 years, and premium units with stainless heat exchangers (and strong warranties) can last longer. Lifespan depends heavily on installation quality, water quality, and whether the boiler is serviced annually.

Neglected boilers — never serviced, running on sludge-filled systems — often fail well before 10 years.

What extends boiler life

  • Correct sizing and quality installation
  • Annual professional servicing
  • Clean system water (filters, inhibitor, flushing)
  • Soft or treated water in hard-water areas
  • Prompt repair of small faults before they cascade

What shortens it

Skipped servicing, system sludge, limescale, oversizing (short-cycling) and ignoring small faults all shorten boiler life. Good habits genuinely add years.

This is not a DIY repair

Combi boilers are gas-fired appliances regulated under the BC Safety Standards Act. Opening the unit, touching the gas valve, or working on the flue without a valid BC gas-fitter licence is both unsafe and illegal. Diagnosing the fault is helpful — fixing it should always be left to a certified technician.
