Combi Boiler Ignition System Repair

When your boiler clicks but won't light — or lights then locks out — the ignition system is usually the culprit. Here's what's involved.

Licensed & Insured Gas-Certified Technicians Serving Vancouver Since 1999

Ignition failure is one of the most common reasons a combi boiler stops producing heat. The ignition system has several parts working in sequence — the igniter or spark electrode, the flame-sensing electrode, the gas valve and the control board. If any one of them fails or drifts out of spec, the boiler will either fail to light or light briefly and then lock out on a flame-loss fault.

Because every part of this sequence involves gas and combustion, ignition repairs are licensed work. A correct repair means identifying which component in the chain has failed, replacing it with the right part, and verifying clean, stable combustion with proper instruments before returning the boiler to service.

Common ignition faults we repair

  • No spark — failed igniter, electrode or PCB output
  • Sparks but won't light — gas supply, gas valve or electrode gap
  • Lights then locks out — dirty or failed flame-sensing electrode
  • Repeated lockouts — gas pressure, blocked condensate, or flue issue
  • Delayed ignition with a 'whoomph' — needs prompt attention

Why ignition issues shouldn't be ignored

A boiler that struggles to ignite, or that ignites with a delayed bang, can indicate a gas or combustion problem that is not safe to leave running. If you smell gas at any point, do not attempt to relight — shut the appliance off and call for emergency service. Prompt repair restores heat and removes a genuine safety risk.

Our repair process

  • Read the fault history and current code
  • Test the igniter, flame sensor, gas valve and gas pressure
  • Replace the failed component with the correct part
  • Verify combustion with a flue-gas analyzer
  • Confirm reliable ignition across several cycles

Smell gas or suspect carbon monoxide? Leave now.

If you smell gas, hear hissing, or your CO alarm sounds, leave the building immediately and call your gas utility's emergency line from outside. Do not operate switches or relight the appliance. Once you are safe, call us for a licensed repair.
