Boiler Pilot Light Issues

Licensed & Insured Gas-Certified Technicians Serving Vancouver Since 1999

While most modern combi boilers use electronic ignition rather than a standing pilot light, many older boilers and some current models still rely on a pilot flame. A pilot that keeps going out, burns yellow instead of blue, or won't light at all indicates a problem that needs professional attention.

Pilot light faults can stem from a dirty thermocouple (the safety sensor that detects the flame), a draft or ventilation issue blowing the flame out, a blocked pilot injector, or a failing gas valve. Our licensed gas fitters diagnose and fix pilot light problems safely and efficiently.

Why Does My Pilot Light Keep Going Out?

The most common cause is a failing thermocouple — the safety device that senses the pilot flame and tells the gas valve to stay open. If the thermocouple isn't generating enough millivoltage, the gas valve closes as a safety measure. Other causes include a dirty pilot orifice reducing flame size, a draft blowing the flame out, or a faulty gas regulator.

Our Pilot Light Repair Process

We clean the pilot assembly and orifice, test the thermocouple output, check gas pressure at the pilot supply, and inspect the flame pattern. If the thermocouple or gas valve needs replacement, we provide a fixed written quote and complete the repair using genuine OEM parts.

This is not a DIY repair

Combi boilers are gas-fired appliances regulated under the BC Safety Standards Act. Opening the unit, touching the gas valve, or working on the flue without a valid BC gas-fitter licence is both unsafe and illegal. Diagnosing the fault is helpful — fixing it should always be left to a certified technician.
