What Are AFUE and UEF Ratings?
AFUE rates heating efficiency; UEF rates water-heating efficiency — higher is better.
Two efficiency numbers help you compare heating and hot-water equipment.
AFUE
Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency is the percentage of fuel a boiler or furnace turns into usable heat — 95% AFUE wastes only 5%.
UEF
Uniform Energy Factor rates water heaters and tankless units; higher UEF means less energy wasted heating your water.
Key takeaways
- AFUE = heating efficiency
- UEF = water-heating efficiency
- Higher is better for both
- 95% AFUE is the modern standard
