Frozen Condensate Pipe: A Quick Winter Fix
A frozen condensate pipe is a common winter cause of boiler lockout — and often a safe DIY thaw.
During cold snaps, the condensate pipe that drains your high-efficiency boiler can freeze, tripping a lockout. It's one of the few boiler faults you can sometimes fix yourself.
How to thaw it safely
Locate the white plastic pipe running outside. Apply warm (not boiling) water, or a warm cloth/hot-water bottle, along the frozen section. Once cleared, reset the boiler per the manual.
Preventing refreezing
Insulating the external pipe with pipe lagging helps prevent recurrence. If it keeps freezing, a larger or rerouted pipe may be needed.
Key takeaways
- Use warm, not boiling, water on the pipe
- Insulate the external condensate pipe
- Reset the boiler once thawed
- Recurring freezes may need a pipe upgrade
