Yellow or Orange Boiler Flame

Flame colour is a safety signal you should never ignore.

Licensed & Insured Gas-Certified Technicians Serving Vancouver Since 1999

A correctly burning combi boiler shows a crisp blue flame. A yellow, orange or lazy flame can indicate incomplete combustion, which can produce carbon monoxide — a colourless, odourless and potentially deadly gas.

If you can see an abnormal flame colour or have any CO concern, stop using the boiler and call a licensed technician immediately. Make sure you have a working CO alarm.

Why this is urgent

  • Yellow/orange flame suggests incomplete combustion
  • Incomplete combustion can produce carbon monoxide
  • Soot or staining around the boiler is another warning sign
  • Headaches, nausea or drowsiness in the home are CO warning signs — leave and call 911/your gas utility
  • Always keep a working CO alarm near sleeping areas

Smell gas or suspect carbon monoxide? Leave now.

If you smell gas, hear hissing, or your CO alarm sounds, leave the building immediately and call your gas utility's emergency line from outside. Do not operate switches or relight the appliance. Once you are safe, call us for a licensed repair.
