Combi Boiler Pilot Light or Ignition Won't Stay Lit
Most modern combis use electronic ignition — but the symptoms are similar.
Most modern combi boilers use electronic ignition rather than a standing pilot, but the symptom is the same: the boiler clicks and tries to light but the flame won't establish or hold. This points to the ignition electrode, flame sensor, gas supply or gas valve.
Ignition work is gas work — leave it to a licensed gas fitter. If you smell gas at any point, treat it as an emergency.
Common ignition faults
- No or low gas supply
- Faulty igniter or spark electrode
- Dirty or failed flame-sensing electrode
- Gas valve fault
- Blocked condensate causing lockout
Smell gas or suspect carbon monoxide? Leave now.
If you smell gas, hear hissing, or your CO alarm sounds, leave the building immediately and call your gas utility's emergency line from outside. Do not operate switches or relight the appliance. Once you are safe, call us for a licensed repair.
