Troubleshooting
Smell From the Boiler Condensate or Drain
Most condensate smells are harmless — but rule out combustion issues.
A faint musty smell near the condensate drain is usually harmless, caused by standing condensate in the trap. However, any smell of combustion gases, or a sharp acrid odour, can indicate a flue or combustion issue that must be checked immediately.
If you suspect combustion fumes or have any CO concern, stop using the boiler and call a technician.
What to consider
- Musty drain smell: often a dry or dirty condensate trap
- Acrid/combustion smell: possible flue or combustion fault — urgent
- Ensure your CO alarm is working
- Don't block the boiler's air vents
- Have the flue checked at every service
This is not a DIY repair
Combi boilers are gas-fired appliances regulated under the BC Safety Standards Act. Opening the unit, touching the gas valve, or working on the flue without a valid BC gas-fitter licence is both unsafe and illegal. Diagnosing the fault is helpful — fixing it should always be left to a certified technician.
