Troubleshooting
Combi Boiler Keeps Shutting Off
A boiler that won't stay running is protecting itself from something.
A boiler that fires briefly then shuts off — or repeatedly locks out — is usually responding to a safety condition such as overheating, low pressure, poor circulation or a flame-detection problem. This is called short-cycling, and it wears components quickly.
Because the causes touch the gas, combustion and pressurized systems, a licensed technician should diagnose it.
Why boilers short-cycle or lock out
- Low system pressure
- Poor circulation (pump, airlock, closed valve)
- Overheating from limescale or sludge
- Flame-detection (flame rod) fault
- Oversized boiler for the heat demand
This is not a DIY repair
Combi boilers are gas-fired appliances regulated under the BC Safety Standards Act. Opening the unit, touching the gas valve, or working on the flue without a valid BC gas-fitter licence is both unsafe and illegal. Diagnosing the fault is helpful — fixing it should always be left to a certified technician.
