Uneven Home Heating
If some rooms in your home are always cold while others are too hot, your heating system needs balancing. An unbalanced system wastes energy (the boiler works harder trying to heat cold rooms), creates comfort issues, and puts unnecessary strain on your boiler and pump.
System balancing is the process of adjusting the flow through each radiator so every room reaches the set temperature at roughly the same time. It requires measuring temperature differentials across each radiator, adjusting lockshield valves, and sometimes reconfiguring pipework. Our technicians balance systems to within 2°C across rooms.
Why Is My Home Heating Unevenly?
The most common cause is incorrect system balancing — too much hot water flows to radiators nearest the boiler, starving distant radiators. Other causes include sludge in distant radiators restricting flow, undersized radiators in larger rooms, poor pipework design (especially in home extensions), or failing TRVs that don't regulate properly.
Our System Balancing Process
We measure the temperature drop across every radiator with a digital thermometer, calculate the correct flow rates, and adjust each lockshield valve accordingly. We check pump speed and boiler flow temperature settings to optimize for your home's heat loss. After balancing, we verify all rooms reach target temperature within 15 minutes of each other.
This is not a DIY repair
Combi boilers are gas-fired appliances regulated under the BC Safety Standards Act. Opening the unit, touching the gas valve, or working on the flue without a valid BC gas-fitter licence is both unsafe and illegal. Diagnosing the fault is helpful — fixing it should always be left to a certified technician.
