Kettling is the distinctive rumbling, banging, or whistling sound your boiler makes when water flow is restricted and the heat exchanger overheats — similar to a kettle boiling. In Vancouver's soft-water areas, kettling is usually caused by sludge buildup rather than limescale.

What Causes Kettling in a Boiler

Kettling happens when water can't flow fast enough through the heat exchanger to carry heat away. The restricted flow causes localized boiling, creating steam bubbles that collapse violently (cavitation). The restriction is usually from sludge or limescale deposits inside the heat exchanger, a failing circulation pump, or system blockage.

How We Fix Kettling
