Combi Boiler Circulation Pump Replacement

The circulation pump moves heated water through your home. When it fails, you lose heat — here's what's involved in replacing one correctly.

Licensed & Insured Gas-Certified Technicians Serving Vancouver Since 1999

The circulation pump (or circulator) is the component that pushes hot water from your combi boiler out through your radiators or radiant loops and back again. When it weakens or fails, you'll often notice cold radiators, uneven heating, unusual noise from the boiler, or a complete loss of heat even though the burner is firing.

Replacing a circulation pump correctly means isolating and draining the right section of the system, matching the pump's head and flow rate to your home's distribution, bleeding air from the system afterward, and verifying flow and pressure. It is precise hydronic work — and because the pump sits inside a sealed gas appliance, it must be handled by a licensed technician.

Signs your circulation pump may be failing

  • Radiators stay cold while the boiler is running
  • Heating is uneven — some rooms warm, others cold
  • Humming, grinding or vibrating noise from the boiler
  • Frequent boiler lockouts or overheating faults
  • Hot boiler but no heat reaching the rest of the house

What the replacement involves

  • Diagnosing the pump versus other causes (airlock, valve, PCB)
  • Isolating and draining the affected section
  • Fitting a correctly matched OEM or equivalent pump
  • Re-pressurizing, bleeding air and checking flow
  • Verifying the boiler reaches and holds temperature

Why this isn't a DIY repair

A combi boiler is a gas-fired pressure appliance. Opening it, working near the gas valve and heat exchanger, and re-pressurizing the sealed system all carry real safety and warranty implications. An incorrectly sized or installed pump can cause short-cycling, noise and premature failure. Diagnosing the symptom yourself is fine — the repair should be done by a licensed technician.

This is not a DIY repair

Combi boilers are gas-fired appliances regulated under the BC Safety Standards Act. Opening the unit, touching the gas valve, or working on the flue without a valid BC gas-fitter licence is both unsafe and illegal. Diagnosing the fault is helpful — fixing it should always be left to a certified technician.
