How Combi Boilers Work | Complete Explanation

What is a Combi Boiler?

A "combi" (combination) boiler heats your home AND provides hot water on-demand from one compact unit. No separate water heater needed.

The 4-Step Heating Process

1

Gas Burns in Burner

Natural gas ignites in the burner chamber, creating high heat. The burner can modulate (adjust flame size) from 25-100% to match heating needs.

2

Heat Exchanger Transfers Energy

The hot combustion gases pass through a stainless steel heat exchanger. This transfers heat to water flowing through the boiler without mixing the gases and water.

3

Diverter Valve Routes Water

A smart diverter valve sends water either to your radiators/underfloor heating (winter heating) or to your taps (hot water on demand).

4

Circulation & Delivery

The built-in circulation pump pushes heated water through pipes to radiators, baseboards, or underfloor systems. Heated water goes instantly to your taps.

Key Components Explained

Burner

Ignites gas to create heat

Heat Exchanger

Transfers heat to water

Diverter Valve

Routes water to heating or taps

Circulation Pump

Pushes water through pipes

Thermostat

Controls desired temperature

Pressure Gauge

Monitors system pressure

Expansion Tank

Absorbs pressure changes

Safety Valve

Prevents over-pressure

Modulation: The Smart Feature

Modern combi boilers "modulate" - meaning they adjust their output from 25% to 100% to match your home's heating needs at that moment.

Example: On a mild 15°C day, your boiler might run at 40% to maintain 20°C inside. On a cold -10°C day, it runs at 100%. This saves energy and money.

Result: 95% AFUE efficiency means 95% of gas energy becomes usable heat. Very little is wasted.

Condensing Boilers (95% AFUE)

Traditional boilers waste heat from exhaust gases. Condensing boilers recover that heat.

The exhaust cools down so much that water vapor in the gases condenses to liquid (hence the name). That latent heat gets recovered and used.

Result: An extra 10-15% efficiency over standard boilers. Lower heating bills and smaller carbon footprint.
