Heat Pump No Heat Emergency
If your heat pump quits in the cold, use backup heat and run these checks before calling.
A heat pump failing in winter is urgent. Most have backup (auxiliary) heat to keep you warm while you troubleshoot or wait for service.
Immediate steps
Switch the thermostat to EMERGENCY/AUX heat to stay warm, then check the breaker, filter, and that the outdoor unit isn't iced over or blocked. Reset once if needed.
When to call
If there's no heat from the heat pump or backup, the outdoor unit is silent or iced solid, or you hear grinding, call for emergency service.
Key takeaways
- Use EMERGENCY/AUX heat to stay warm
- Check breaker, filter and outdoor unit
- Clear ice/snow from the outdoor unit
- Call for service if no heat from either stage
